Auto-defrosters
Can anyone tell me who the idiot was who decided to make the compressor turn on when the defroster is selected in your car!? It is a ridiculous idea! It doesn't help and it hurts fuel economy and we all know how important that has become! I personally, like to leave the defroster on all the time to circulate the air without having it blowing directly on me. However, if I do so, the compressor is running and devouring the power from the engine along with much extra fuel. My truck only gets 15mpg anyway so, every little bit helps. If anyone can direct me to someone who can actually make a difference, please let me know! Thank you!

The compressor is used to remove the moisture from the damp,fog/frost causing air, creating nice low humidity air. Thus eliminating the fog/frost. IMHO
That's the function on paper! In reality, it is taking more than it is giving. The dry air it produces is not enough of a benefit to warrant the cost of the extra fuel and power loss especially with fuel prices as they are. IMNSHO
Actually it's doing just the oppocite. Cold air is very dry. Cycling the A/C creates humidity on the evaporator coils which in turn puts moisture in the air as the compressor kicks off and warm air off the heater blows over the evaporator. All you need to do is unplug the A/C compressor during the winter and alls well, unless you suffer from nose bleeds from dry air. In that case it woud be wise to leave the A/C to cycle on & off putting humidity in the air. Remember, moist air feels warmer then the air temprature is. Dry air feels cooler to us. So in the winter you humidify the air and in the summer you dehumidify.
I always unplug the compressor in the winter and if I weren't married, I'd never hook it back up!
I still stand by my earlier statement. The benefits are heavily outweighed by the negatives.
